Which bits to start with? Here's our advice!
For a beginner nail technician, choosing the right tools for the job can be overwhelming. One of the basic accessories you should invest in is a good-quality nail drill and a set of interchangeable bits. Diamond bits, ceramic bits or maybe sintered carbide? Slightly rounded or pointed? With so many options on the market, choosing the best one for your needs can be a challenge. In this post we'll take a closer look at the nail bits we recommend as bits for beginner technicians.
1. Choose a fine grit on the bit
Bits have different colour markings that let you determine which type of grit has been used. The grit indicates the level of abrasive coarseness, of which we distinguish:
- Very fine (yellow and red);
- Standard (blue);
- Coarse, intended for special tasks (green and black markings).
We recommend starting your e-file manicure adventure with yellow and red bits, with which you'll gently work and beautifully buff the nail plate.

2. Go for rounded bit shapes
Among the available bit shapes, the safer ones to begin with are rounded shapes, e.g. a ball or a rounded cone. Leave bits with a truncated tip and points for a later stage, once you've gained more experience.
3. Ceramic bits – perfect for the start
One of the greatest advantages of ceramic bits is that they don't heat up while working the nail plate. They're perfect for long work and are also resistant to mechanical damage and cracking. So they'll be ideal at the start for less experienced nail technicians.
